Tote Bags: Unfold

This assignment required designing two tote bag variations that capture the theme of the upcoming exhibition, Unfold—A Celebration of Design through Time. Each design needed to reflect the distinct style of a selected designer. I chose David Carson and Jessica Hische as my influences.

David Carson

For this brief I was Inspired by Suzanne Siegel’s fabric collage of the ocean (‘Full Moon Ocean I’ -  Suzanne Siegel). I found the way she utilised colour, shape, and texture visually interesting, and I knew I wanted to use the ocean within my work, as a nod to Carson’s influences. The collage, alongside the boldness of the type speaks to the chaos often found within Carson’s work that engages people - I think my design is successful as it embraces this.

Jessica Hische

The typography in Hisches ‘Tomorrow I Will Be Brave’ project inspired me for this brief. I love the concept behind the storybooks, but in particular the way Hische styles the type, and her use of bold colours. I decided to experiment with how I could use this typographic layout, and make it my own, giving the tote a joyous celebratory feel.
